Started his career in 1962 at Toei Animation as an animator. He is cited with bringing pop art into manga.
Hayashi started to draw for the magazine Garo in 1967, and soon made his breakthrough with the manga Red Colored Elegy about the break-up of an unmarried couple. The singer Morio Agata named a popular song of his after the manga. It also received an animated adaptation 37 years after its release.
Hayao Miyazaki names Hayashi as an influence on his work.
