Rie Fu was born in Tokyo, Japan, but later moved to Maryland in 1992 until 1995. While there she acquired piano lessons and inspiration. She then moved back to Japan to complete her secondary education and in July of 2007 she went on to graduate from the Central Saint Martins college of the University of the Arts London. Being a student there, she studied Fine Art Painting and now does most of the art for, and in, her albums. After learning guitar she soon began writing songs. One, Life is Like a Boat, became the ending theme for Bleach.
