Sonoda moved to Tokyo in 1984 and joined the animation studio Artmic. There he worked as a designer for titles such as Gall Force and Bubblegum Crisis. He left Artmic in 1991 and began work on his manga, Gunsmith Cats, which remains as his best known work to this day receiving both Harvey and Tezuka Award nominations.

He also has a deep knowledge of firearms.
