The creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! He loved playing shogi, mahjong, card games, and tabletop role-playing games.
In an interview with Shonen Jump, Takahashi stated that his favorite manga from other authors included Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure by Hirohiko Araki, and Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. He also enjoyed reading American comics, with Hellboy being his favorite American comic book character.
On July 6, 2022, a body in snorkeling gear was found off the coast of Nago City, Okinawa, which was identified the following day as Takahashi. It was revealed by a U.S. Army Officer that Takahashi attempted to aid in the rescue of three people at a riptide in Mermaid's Grotto, Onna, on July 4, 2022.
