Girls² (pronounced as Girls Girls) are a 9 member J-pop group under the talent agency LDH JAPAN. It consists of the idol groups mirage², miracle² and magical² (pronounced the same way). These 3 temporary units were originally formed to provide theme songs for and act as real life units to promote different seasons of the live-action magical girl series Girls × Heroine, and later came together to form the supergroup as a permanent unit. However, not all of their members joined, since some of them graduated and left. The eight girls, who portrayed the main characters of the first three seasons of this children's TV show, debuted on June 2019 as Girls². A new main cast member joined them after some time.
As the first major idol group from their agency which is known for their artist groups, Girls² have established a rather contrasting image from most other girl groups of the same category given that idols and artists hold different implications in Japan. All of their choreography contain intricate dance moves, and dance breaks are also incorporated in their music videos and live performances sometimes — both of which are signature features of LDH artists. Being graduates from LDH's performing arts school EXPG STUDIO, all the girls especially excel at dancing as well as singing. While their discography is indeed filled with cheerful and bubbly pop songs, they don't quite resemble the typical cute concept of Japanese idols. Thanks to their distinctive qualities, they've managed to gain fans of all ages — from children and teenagers to adults alike — despite the fact that their songs are targeted toward young girls, as their root lies in a TV show for such audience.
In a very short amount of time, Girls² have performed on several well-known Japanese TV music programs, held quite a few solo live shows, radio programs and a themed cafe, received an assortment of anime, manga and drama made specifically for them, walked on the runway of a famous fashion event and so on. Alongside their active release of new singles, they also upload videos of trying out fun activities and challenges on their second YouTube channel Garu Garu Channeru (Girl Girl Channel). They appeared on the special edition of NYLON JAPAN magazine's March 2021 issue after winning "NYLON'S NEXT 2021" under the "Girl Groups" category.
A short TV anime dedicated to Girls², titled GaruGaku.: Sei Girls Square Gakuin, aired from Spring 2020 to Winter 2021. All of its protagonists are named after the members' first names, and they're also voiced by their real life counterparts. Furthermore, their character designs are based on the members' appearances for Chuwapane! — the 3rd single of Girls². On top of two manga adaptations, the anime received a live-action drama sequel titled GaruGaku ~Girls Garden~ where the members played the roles of their respective characters. Both of these shows got second seasons. Their theme songs were either provided by the whole group or their sub-units east², west² and south² that were created for the anime. Additionally, they've two other sub-units named Oha Girl from Girls² and Misaki Kurea from Girls².
